Activities for Promotion of Science in Kendriya Vidyalayas
Science is involved in every sphere of our life, hence to make it interesting a plethora of activities are conducted in Kendriya Vidyalayas under Gurugram region. In KVs the curriculum is aligned with modern scientific advancements, providing well-equipped laboratories, and promoting inquiry-based learning methods among the students.
Some of the Science activities are done during morning assembly while others are conducted as per the academic calendar issued by KVS. Every week, on a specific day (Thursday) an experiment/demonstration is conducted by a group of students under the supervision of Senior Science faculty. Activity is so selected that it explains some basic concept of science like- Newton’s laws/ Gravity/Human eye/pH/Density etc. via demonstration. Tiny tots enjoy the activity just like a magic while senior students try to explore the Science behind this magic ! All the important days of the year related to Science are celebrated during morning assembly in a befitting manner. For example World AIDS day is celebrated via slogan writing, expert talk. To spark the inner environmentalist in students, Forest week is celebrated by tree plantation in the school premises etc. Under the “Talk by Expert Speaker”, an eminent Scientist from the University is invited for enriching children’s knowledge on some important concepts like health/cancer/drug abuse etc.
Under yearly activities, INSPIRE-MANAK award, National Children’s Science Congress (NCSC), Rashtriya Bal Vaigyanik Pradarshani , Green Olympiad, Green Building Contest, Green School programme and Olympiads based on all the disciplines of Science(Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, etc.) are conducted as per schedule. A few selected students from senior classes prepare an innovative project under the INSPIRE MANAK award and these projects are uploaded on the specified website. Children get grant to make a working model of their project and selected ones compete for the higher levels of competition. Who knows that one of these budding scientists makes a new and path-breaking discovery ! Survey based projects are prepared by students based on some local problems under the National Children’s Science Congress –NCSC. Working/Static models are prepared by children under the Jawahar Lal Nehru National Science Exhibition. Green Olympiad-an objective type national competition exam based an environmental issues is organized every year under the umbrella of TERI. Educational trips to Science Museums, Medical College, TERI, Nearby Industry/ factory, are also organized time to time every year to expose students to promote experiential learning by the students. In addition to all the above activities, regular drills are conducted aimed at protection during fire or an earthquake !
All such activities ,that are conducted, are a gateway to new experiences, ideas, and perspectives that can broaden students’horizons & inculcate scientific temperament in them.
